commercial historic district

OVERVIEW

In 2012, PDP was selected to prepare Design Guidelines to the Downtown Commercial Historic District for the City of Paterson, New Jersey to identify the architectural features of the Downtown District and educate the community for a harmonious future. Paterson, one of the country's first planned industrial cities, is located along the Passaic River in northern New Jersey. With an industrial history that includes cotton, paper and textile mills, Colt revolvers, and locomotives, Paterson's diversity quickly expanded in its population and its architecture.

The Downtown Commercial Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 with 210 contributing properties dating to the mid-20th century comprising of commercial and retail multi-story structures. Their character of the architectural fabric and opportunities for appropriate alterations were addressed in PDP'sDesign Guidelines.
